PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:

Education Week Thank You

I would like to thank those parents/carers, relatives and community members who took the opportunity to visit the open classrooms during our Education Week open classrooms.

The Sausage Sizzle raised $369 which will go towards the purchase of an Interactive Whiteboard. A public Thank you to Stephen Hoad [GA], Mrs Vale, Mrs Fogarty, Ms Zin, Mrs Chirkoff , Year 6 School Councillors, P & C President Kanchan Bakshi and helpers for getting everything prepared ,cooked and delivered on time. Congratulations on a great effort.

The Year 6 organised drink stall raised $96 which was donated to Ryde Rotary Club to sponsor a child with disabilities to attend a circus performance.

Student Welfare – Road Safety

It is sometimes difficult to convince students of the value of road safety, specifically safe crossing of the road, when some parents set such a poor example. Two recent examples have been when the asphalting was occurring the double gates were open and parents either took students directly across the road or worse still a parent called students across the road. Given we have two crossings one of which is manned by an RTA Crossing Supervisor such behaviour is both irresponsible and puts students and drivers at risk.

Reporting to Parents

At the end of Term 2 the mid-year written report, which reports on Semester 1 achievements, will be issued to parents/carers. The report will be issued on Friday 3rd July [Week 10].

Mid-Year Interviews will be held in the last week of term at various times depending on teacher’s timetables. On Tuesday 7th July interviews will be held up to 7pm to support working parents/carers. During the session 3pm -7pm time interpreters will be engaged where necessary. Teachers will issue interview booking sheets closer to the time. You may like to note the above dates in your diaries.

Interactive Whiteboards (IWB)

Currently the school has 4 IWB’s on order which will be jointly funded by the school and P & C Association. It is expected that they will be installed by the end of the term. It was decided to commence at the Kindergarten level and work through the school.

At the last P & C meeting Mr Lambert gave an entertaining introduction to the variety of uses of the IWB in teaching and learning program. Following the demonstration the P & C committed to working towards supplying additional IWB’s through their 2009 fundraising activities.

They will return to rectify some defects and the GA’s will paint items, such as seating and certain uprights which were outside the scope of work. Asphalting is essentially completed and the playground certainly looks good and is now much safer Carpeting – I expect to have the dates this week

Canteen News

Wednesday Special 17th June—Sushi Rolls are $2.50 each not $4 as advertised. As advertised.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

On Wednesday, 28th May, the staff at Homebush Public School, held our yearly “Biggest Morning Tea”, to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Every dollar raised at our school and at other organisations across the country, makes a difference. Donations help to raise funds for Cancer Research; for Support services, which help to improve the quality of life of cancer patients, people living with cancer, their families and Carers; and Education and Prevention Programs.

Last year “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” raised $10 million for the Cancer Council. This years, thanks to the kind donations of our staff at Homebush Public School, we raised $415.00.

This money will be sent to the Cancer Council towards the fight against Cancer.

Thank you to all who contributed.

FROM THE OFFICE

Lost Property There is a large amount of clothing in the lost property bin in the office foyer.

Councillors sorted and distributed named items this week. The remaining items will be placed on the wall near the bell on a suitably sunny days and those items not collected by the end of next week (19th June) will be donated to charity.

Please make sure your children’s clothes, especially jackets and tops, are clearly marked with their full name so their clothing can be easily identified. This not only aids the return of items but installs greater ownership and therefore responsibility in the children.

Peer Support

Students have settled very well into their Peer Support groups and the Year 6 leaders are doing an excellent job ensuring that the activities are completed each week and everyone feels valued.

In the past couple of weeks, groups have learnt different ways to respond to different situations and that they can cope by having a go and not giving up. This is called being resilient. They all made a jack-in-the-box as a reminder that they can spring back when they feel under pressure from circumstances.

The students have also learnt that, with the support of members of their family they can be more resilient.

Debating

The Premier’s Debating Challenge Competition has begun. Last week our Year 5 students unsuccessfully debated ‘That students should learn a second language’. It was difficult to argue against this but our students put forward some very good points and did very well considering it was their first time. This week the Year 6 team have their first debate against Hampden Park.

Public Speaking The District final of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition will be held in the school library on Tuesday 23rd June. The Junior competition will commence at 9.30 and the Senior competition will start at 12.30pm. Annaliese in 3C and Karan from 4K will be the school’s representatives in the junior section and Abirami in 5W and Thulasi from 6J will participate in the senior section of the competition.

Parents are invited to attend to support our students and also to listen to the excellent speeches presented by students from other schools in our district.

P & C MEETING REPORT

Thanks to the hardy souls who braved the cold weather to attend Tuesday nights’ P & C meeting. Mrs Fogarty gave an interesting and insightful address on the Peer Support Program which emphasises Resilience. In a world of change this is an extremely important skill to have.

The meeting reaffirmed the P & C’s commitment to Interactive Whiteboards and has planned a fundraising DISCO for Friday 3rd July combined with food stalls to encourage attendance of students and parents/carers. Watch for more details.

Next Meeting Tuesday 11th August 7pm in the Library
