Eating at school

Children need nutritious food every day. They have a short (20min) break at recess and a longer break (50min) at lunch time. A piece of fruit is an ideal snack at recess time. Lunches should be nutritious and filling. As young children often eat slowly, try to provide a lunch which is not too large for the child. Lunches are generally eaten in the classroom from 1.00 – 1.10pm.

Health Regulations

Good health is vital to school progress. Parents need to ensure that children maintain high standards of personal hygiene. The close proximity of children in a school means that infections can easily be spread. Following is a list of childhood diseases and the period of exclusions from school.

Acute conjunctivitis : Exclusion from school until all discharge has ceased.

Chicken Pox : Exclusion for at least 7 days after the first spots appear.

Measles : Exclusion for at least five days after the rash appears.

Mumps : Excluded for at least 10 days after swelling occurs.

Rubella (German Measles) : Excluded for at least five days after rash the appears.

Impetigo (Scabby Sores) : The family doctor should be consulted. If sores are covered by a clean dressing, children are allowed to attend school. If sores are not covered and are on exposed parts of the body, exclusion is necessary until sores have healed.

Pediculosis (Head Lice) : Hair needs to be treated with the current recommended hair treatment. Update leaflets can be obtained from the office.

Ringworm : Excluded until treatment has begun. The school may request a medical certificate to prove that this has happened.

Immunisation

Parents of children starting school must obtain an immunisation certificate from their family doctor to prove that the child has received all required immunisation.

Community Nurse

A community nurse visits the school each year to conduct medical examinations of children in Kindergarten and new enrolments. A consent form is sent home and those who return the form are examined. It is important that the forms are returned as problems which affect a child’s schooling are frequently identified.

Dental Care

A school dental service exists and is available free to all school children. A dental service van may be located at the school or parents may take their children to a clinic.

Addresses and phone numbers may be obtained from the local Area Health Service.
