The primary school curriculum is structured into six Key Learning Areas:
English
Mathematics
Science and Technology
Human Society and its Environment
Creative and Practical Arts
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
Each
area of the curriculum is an important part of the child’s education and must
be covered each year. The school provides additional support and extension
activities so that all children are able to reach their full potential.
The
ESL teachers provide extra English instruction for those children who have a
first language other than English. This support takes many forms. Generally,
children who speak little or no English are withdrawn from class for up to 45
minutes each day to receive small-group instruction. In-class support is
provided for children until they develop their English skills. This means that
two teachers work together in the class taking small groups of children or
providing individual support. The ESL teacher works across all Key Learning
Areas as English is the key to learning in Australian schools. Homebush Public
School has three ESL positions.
This
teacher provides support for children who are experiencing difficulty with
reading and mathematics. Small groups of children are withdrawn for intensive
work and the teacher also works in classrooms to support the children in their
class work.
